YOUR NAME Street Address City, State, Zip Code Phone Number youremail@righthere.com July 13, 2004 Dear Friend's Name, As you probably know, I'm pursuing a career in filmmaking. You probably also know that filmmaking is a notoriously difficult profession to pursue. One is rarely given the resources needed to make a successful film until one has already made a successful film. As a result, the industry depends disproportionately on "who you know" or worse, "who you are." Unfortunately, I don't play racket ball with Steven Spielberg, and I'm not the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola. Luckily, there's another way in. There are success stories from several working-class talents like me. At present, the name Sam Raimi looms large. In 1981, Raimi, along with a group of talented friends, struggled to raise the funds necessary to make a little horror movie called The Evil Dead. Today, Raimi is the director of Spider Man and its sequel, two of the most successful films of the last decade. I'm writing you about a project of my own. It is called Momentary Engineering. It's a short-film, a science-fiction work-place romance, that's both funny and moving. I'm working with a great team. We've worked together before, and we've produced several smaller films, some of which have won important awards. I am confident that, should we gather the necessary funding, this film could win festivals, find an audience, and create industry connections. In short, it could launch careers. In the age of digital video, a professional movie can be produced at a tenth of the cost -- but even a tenth of the cost is beyond our means. However, it is not beyond the means of a large number of contributors, each investing small amounts. I am hoping that you will be one of those investors, and will share just a small contribution, to help me take an important step in pursuit of my goals. Even ten dollars is a big help, After all, ten dollars from a hundred people is a thousand dollars -- and that's already a healthy slice of our operating budget. If you can't contribute yourself, if you can spare only a few dollars, even if you can spare more, you can also help by seeking other contributors. We're also offering some gifts as a "thank you" for contributions. On the sheet I've included, you'll find a breakdown of each contribution level. If you're interested in receiving a gift, fill out the slip I've included, and return it, with your donation, to the address indicated above, preferably before August 15th. You can also make your donation via secure credit card transaction online at the production's website, http://www.misplacedplanet.com/momentaryengineering. If you have any questions at all, please call me at (###) ### ####! I'd love to talk to you about the project! Sincerely, Your Signature
